Fat Pencil Studio’s modeling process for construction details was inspired by Dennis Fukai at insitebuilders. His books and e-pubs offer highly illustrated examples of how to organize a SketchUp model using nested groups and the Outliner window. In many cases, you can achieve similar results using carefully named layers and components.
We’ve used both approaches successfully. The key is to create a SketchUp model in the same manner as you would construct an actual building: add structural elements first, finishes last, and keep all the systems in between carefully organized.
