It was almost a year ago that we first mentioned the javascript library d3 (full name: Data Driven Documents.) So we figured it’s about time we post a working example…

Here is a demo we cooked up based on public records of county health inspections of Portland restaurants from three months in 2012 (data from civicapps.org). Each dot represents one scored inspection, and the interactive legend defines the dot colors. It’s a relief to see so many of them are green! You can zoom in and out to explore the map, and mouse over different parts to highlight score ranges, find out the name of restaurants and view the inspection scores received.

It’s been a fun process to develop our capabilities in the realm of interactive graphics and data visualization. We look forward to applying these skills to other projects and treasure troves of data.
